Legal Secretarial – Scots Law
The Legal Secretarial – Scots Law training course is available at the Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness Pitman Training Centres or via Online Distance Learning through our Pitman Campus.
This training course focuses specifically on Scots Law and is essential training for anyone keen to work as a Legal Secretary or Legal Administrator. You will learn the practices and procedures for various legal specialisms such as Conveyancing, Criminal Law and Family Law, Wills and Civil Litigation. You’ll look at the different documentation and terminology used in each of the key legal areas.

The Legal Profession: qualifying as a Solicitor, the Law Society of Scotland, support staff, the legal secretary/administrator role, how laws are made, Scottish court structure, forms of communication legal document layout, financial records.
Criminal Law: Introduction to criminal law, criminal procedure, attendance notes, statement of accused, witness letter and statement, the trial, the judgement, preparing an invoice.
Wills: Introduction to wills, preparing a will, a codicil, power of attorney, rules of intestacy, initial writ, grant of confirmation, letter to a beneficiary, executry accounts.
Civil Litigation: Introduction to civil litigation, letter before action, summary cause summons, serving the summons, defences, a record, a motion, court of session.
Family Law: Introduction to family law, basic divorce procedure, instruction form for divorce, initial writ, notice of intention to defend, adjustments, affidavits, child welfare hearings.
Conveyancing: Introduction to conveyancing, land register, selling property, stages in a conveyancing transaction, advance notices, property enquiry certificate, settlement statement, final completion process.
This course is ideal if you’re new to the legal world and need to learn the jargon, processes and documentation connected with legal aspects of various law sectors.
To enable you to move into the legal sector and be confident with the jargon, abbreviations and forms that you will encounter.
Before you start this course we’d recommend you have a proficient level of Microsoft Word experience.
