Core Courses

Programming Fundamentals

This course is designed as an introduction to programming and programming concepts. You’ll learn the most common command line interface and operating system commands for both Windows and Linux-based computers. You’ll explore the structure of a simple computer program, examine variables, and the role of functions, cover the design process behind writing a computer program.

You’ll explore program flow, decision making, and looping, as well as how algorithms and flowcharts are used in computer program design.

IT Specialist – HTML and CSS

The HTML and CSS course is an excellent course for those looking to gain employability skills in the area of web development.

The course covers the objectives for the IT Specialist exam, putting a solid entry-level certification well within reach. Specifically, the course has two distinct parts: HTML (Hypertext Mark-up Language), which includes HTML fundamentals, document structuring, and multimedia presentation, and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), which includes styling web pages.

IT Specialist – JavaScript

Topics in this course include learning about JavaScript operators, keywords, and methods, using variables, data types, and functions, implementing decisions and loops, interacting with the DOM (Document Object Model), and interacting with forms.

In all of these topics, you will clearly see how JavaScript is used to enhance web pages. In addition, this course will help anyone looking to improve their employability prospects in the areas of designing and building websites.

IT Specialist – HTML5 Application Development

This course expands on the knowledge gained in the courses on HTML, CSS, and JavaScript from the same ITS series.

Advanced web design and development concepts, such as application lifecycle management, graphics and animation, forms, layouts, and JavaScript coding are the main topics in this course. This course and subsequent certification
is the next logical step up for someone wanting a career in web design and development.

“I started the Executive PA/Secretarial Diploma course at the Pitman Training Centre in Edinburgh in August 2012 and followed up with 2 Legal Modules.
Before I started my Pitman Training course I was working in retail and not feeling like I was getting anything out of my job. My training has helped me to build up the knowledge and skills required to work in a much more demanding position and has been a great help to me.
In April 2013, I left my job and applied for a job as a receptionist at a Hotel outside Aberfeldy – a job which a friend had seen advertised and suggested I applied for. It has made me a feel a lot more comfortable in what I am doing and has allowed me to go over parts that I was having any difficulty with.
All of the tutors and staff at the Centre in Edinburgh have been fantastic, and are always there on the end of the phone or an email whenever I have needed any help or clarification on any part of the course. “I have completed two Diplomas at Pitman Training, first the Secretarial Diploma, and then the Accounts Technician Diploma with AAT.
I was at School before training began, started Pitman in the final year of school through my mum’s suggestion and finished training just before I got my University degree.
As I was at University during the peak of the economic crisis it was emphasised to us by every tutor/lecturer that just having a degree is not enough for you to stand out from the crowd in the job market. That extra skills and experience are essential.
I was studying economics and finance at university, so after completing the Secretarial Diploma for computer/admin skills I thought it would be a good idea to get some financial related qualification from Pitman.
The training has helped me enormously with University assignments and essay writing. It allowed me to make the most of the Microsoft applications, and therefore produce the best work I could. The touch typing skills I learnt are exceedingly useful, it cuts out so much time and now requires minimal effort to type up my thoughts/information, the words are on the screen pretty much the instant my brain thinks them.
Having Excel and Excel Expert has helped me in too many ways to count. In part-time jobs, I was able to provide a high standard of work and also impress managers by surpassing what is expected of me with computer related tasks.
