About the Course

In this course, you’ll learn about troubleshooting user accounts, managing security at the device level, configuring network connectivity on end-user devices, and managing data access and protection for Windows users across an organisation.

You’ll begin by reviewing key concepts and technologies, including account management, Active Directory (AD), and the basics of device management. You’ll then explore tools, methods, and server roles required to manage Windows deployment strategies, and you’ll learn how to install the operating system and the tools required to successfully migrate user data.

You’ll also learn key configuration settings for browsers and mobile devices to help ensure client privacy. You’ll explore a variety of Windows management tools that can be used by administrators to remotely connect to computers to troubleshoot and fix problems. And you’ll learn about several built-in backup and recovery tools in Windows.

You’ll explore the Windows Update service, and you’ll review the features and techniques used to monitor and manage Windows, including Windows events, monitoring, and performance tools.

“After a change in my personal circumstances in 2012, I decided I wanted a complete change in career and decided to study as a Medical Secretary, opting to take the full diploma at Pitman Training. I previously worked in the Newspaper & Magazine industry, and had done so for 10 years so this was quite a drastic change for me! My most recent role was as an Account Manager for a 3rd Party Retail Consultancy Company. “I relocated to Scotland after teaching English abroad for 15 years. Unable to find similar work here, I spent an anxious 12 months as an office temp, eventually gaining a permanent position as an admin assistant at a law firm in Glasgow. I carried out the usual range of tasks – photocopying, filing, distributing faxes. Although happy to have a job and appreciating its positive qualities, I felt held back – both in my own workplace and on the job market as a whole – by my lack of IT and keyboard skills.
One happy day I made an appointment to see Linda Morrison at the Glasgow Pitman Training Centre. Linda understood my frustration and recommended the Diploma in Business Skills, a qualification that combined basic keyboard training with Microsoft Office courses, plus Effective Business Communication and an elective (from a wide range of options, I chose ‘Get Into HR’).
There were eight modules in all and the sessions had to be fitted in around a full-time job and busy family life. Ultimately I took 18 months to complete it all but felt very proud when I took home my Diploma. I’m still working for the same firm but now run the library and deputise for the Archivist in his absence. My daily work is far more interesting and varied than it once was, and that fact – combined with the high unemployment brought about by the recession – means that I’m not interested in changing jobs in the foreseeable future. Nonetheless, it’s crucial to be flexible in these hard times and to be able to offer additional skills if need be. I don’t regret the time and energy I put into my courses – they’ve given me tremendous self-confidence and a great sense of relief that I’m no longer left behind or marginalised by my lack of knowledge.

“I started the Executive PA/Secretarial Diploma course at the Pitman Training Centre in Edinburgh in August 2012 and followed up with 2 Legal Modules.
Before I started my Pitman Training course I was working in retail and not feeling like I was getting anything out of my job. My training has helped me to build up the knowledge and skills required to work in a much more demanding position and has been a great help to me.
In April 2013, I left my job and applied for a job as a receptionist at a Hotel outside Aberfeldy – a job which a friend had seen advertised and suggested I applied for. The job description entailed working mainly behind reception, dealing with guests, but also comprised of a lot of secretarial based work such as organising functions and meetings and typing up notes and menus etc. I was offered the job only hours after I went for the interview and so of course accepted it straight away.
I applied for the receptionists job 9 months after I began my course, as initially I was in no great rush to find another job, but would rather focus on working through the modules so that I would have the necessary experience for when I did decide to apply for something else.
I have loved doing my Pitman courses and have found the workbooks and online exercises very beneficial. I have enjoyed being able to work through each part of the course in my own time and being able to repeat exercises and aspects of modules has definitely been a help, especially on some of the more tricky subjects. It has made me a feel a lot more comfortable in what I am doing and has allowed me to go over parts that I was having any difficulty with.

“I started doing a Secretarial Diploma at Pitman because I had been working in retail since graduating from university in 2008. I had pretty good admin skills but no qualifications and felt like I was stuck in a rut. Pitman was a perfect fit for me because I was working shifts at my job at Glasgow Science Centre and could come in whenever I was free.
At first I thought I was just going to be getting a qualification for skills I already had but I actually learned a lot more than I expected. Modules like Effective Business Communication were helpful and I did electives in Access and Introduction to Medical Secretary which was extremely helpful in getting my new job.

“After graduating a few years ago and going off for a few years to live abroad, I then came back and decided to pursue a career in law. I decided the best route was to first get experience in a law firm and then perhaps study part time. My goal was to become a legal secretary to start off but the skills required such as Microsoft Office packages and knowledge of legal terminology and procedures was not something I had picked up at university!!
I decided I needed a foot in the door and chose to study for the legal secretarial diploma at Pitman. The course was great because it was completely flexible and the training facilities were of the highest standard. Towards the end of my course, the supervisors referred me to a vacancy at Simpson and Marwick for a litigation secretary. “Having chosen not to go to University, and after a years work in the retail business, I was still unsure as to which career path I ultimately wanted to follow. I enrolled on the Executive PA Diploma course with Pitman Training School in Edinburgh in September 2008, knowing that it was highly respected amongst employers.
The course for me was an undoubted success. I completed the main Microsoft modules reasonably quickly – they proved to be very easy to follow and actually quite a lot of fun! I very much enjoyed having the flexibility to choose which elective courses to do, and I was pleased to be given the choice of seminars as well as computer programmes. I have completed two seminars; both were great fun, and whereas I had found Pitman to be a quiet and studious place, suddenly we got to interact with other students and I met some great people.
I now have the role of Personal Assistant to an Art Broker in Edinburgh, which I found through word of mouth. All that I learnt during my time in Pitman has certainly now been put to use – especially the PA Seminar, which focuses not only on the general office keeping but also on the more personal and, often hugely overlooked aspects. Before Pitman I was not working and was finding it difficult to get job. My lack of computer experience was the major factor. Then a friend recommended Pitman Training to me. Since then my life has dramatically changed from worse to better.
As soon as I completed my studies at Pitman and was about to go to Napier University, I got a job as Fulfilment Officer at Help The Age on part time basis. Pitman Training has helped me in so many ways. It made me very confident in the use PC, my knowledge in Finance has improved a lot due to the practical aspects involved in the studies of which you cannot get in university. I was so confident in the use of sage accounting, purchases and sales ledger invoice processing and accounts reconciliations.
I got my first job three days after completing my studies and since I have had a number temporary jobs due my Pitman qualification. I have worked with HBOS, Quayle Munro Ltd-Investment Banking, City of Edinburgh Council, Action Group and SSPCA, all on temporary basis as Finance Officer since I left Pitman.
I have now secured a permanent employment as Development Finance Administrator with National Trust of Scotland. I got this job because of what I achieved in Pitman as my Line Manager commented. Without Pitman I would not have reached where I am today. God bless Pitman and all the staff in Edinburgh.
Everything at Pitman-Edinburgh is perfect. The trainers are wonderful and willing to help at all time. As someone from Africa, I was finding it very complex to type and to use computer as well but they took their time to teach all the basic necessities and now I am one of the best in computers at work.
The environment is very conducive, the receptionist is the best I have ever met and the course advisors are everything. They care, are very kind, patience and motivates everyone.
I am what I am today because of Pitman Training.
